Advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, have become more common in new vehicles on the market. Designed to enhance driver safety, this technology uses sensors, cameras and dash displays to increase range of vision, recognise hazards, provide warning signals, automate parking, engage emergency braking, detect driver drowsiness and more.

Given the precise nature of these functions, it’s easy to see how important it is for ADAS sensors to remain properly calibrated. Sensors can be knocked out of position by collisions or other impacts to the vehicle, as well as by vehicle modifications and adjustments. This can make them unreliable, distracting the driver or even causing a serious accident.

When does my ADAS need to be calibrated?

As the owner of a vehicle with an ADAS system, it’s important to know when to have it looked at by a technician.

You should book an ADAS calibration after your vehicle has undergone any kind of physical or structural change. This includes:

  • After any collision and other accidental damage, including to the windscreen
  • After carrying out modifications or installing add-ons such as bullbars
  • After services such as wheel alignment, tyre upgrades or suspension repairs

ADAS components that may be affected by the above include:

  • Steering angle sensors
  • Front, rear and surround view cameras
  • Corner sensors
  • Lidar/radar sensors
  • Infrared cameras
  • Electronic control unit

The team at Specialist Auto Cambridge is well versed in these components and able to check and adjust them to ensure their reliability.
